How to Play Imposter

Five steps. One imposter. Zero setup. Here's everything you need to know.

Step 1

Gather Your Friends

Grab 3 to 8 players and one phone. No accounts, no sign-up, no internet needed. Just open the app and you're ready to go.

Step 2

Pick a Category

Choose from dozens of built-in categories like Animals, Food, Places, Movies, and Sports. Or create your own with custom words and inside jokes.

Pass the Phone

Each player takes the phone privately and sees their word. Everyone gets the same secret word, except one player who sees "You are the Imposter."

Step 4

Discuss and Bluff

Talk about the word without giving it away. Ask each other questions, drop subtle hints, and pay attention to who seems unsure. The imposter has to fake it convincingly.

Vote and Reveal

When time's up, everyone votes on who they think the imposter is. Guess right and the group wins. Guess wrong and the imposter gets away with it.
